Jonathan the Caterpillar is amusing to look at and is illustrated on a sturdy 42×28 cm plastic board. His favourite playground is a large apple tree, which is illustrated on the other side of the board.
You show the board, quite straightforwardly and without any special tricks, from the front and back, even your hands can be seen to be empty.
Jonathan seems to be very hungry today, because a big hole has been bitten out of the board. Before the caterpillar chews away any more, the children help conjure up Jonathan’s favourite meal with a magic spell.
You put your empty hand through the hole in the board and actually have a big, juicy apple in your hand which has come from nowhere.
The caterpillar wants to keep the apple for later. Therefore, you throw the apple back into the hole and it disappears like magic. You show the board and your hands again!
This game is repeated several times, much to the delight of the children.
Sooner or later the magician says it would be very nice if he also had an apple because they look so tasty. The children help with a loud magic spell. But it seems that everyone has forgotten about Jonathan, the greedy caterpillar.
Instead of the apple, the climax is the appearance of an apple core so that a wonderful trick finishes on a surprising and funny note.
